Invitation Psalm 40:1-2

"I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry. He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand."

Bible Song Psalm 101:1-3, 6-8

I will sing of your love and justice;
to you, Lord, I will sing praise.

I will be careful to lead a blameless life —
when will you come to me?

I will conduct the affairs of my house
with a blameless heart.

I will not look with approval
on anything that is vile.

I hate what faithless people do;
I will have no part in it...

My eyes will be on the faithful in the land,
that they may dwell with me;

the one whose walk is blameless
will minister to me.

No one who practices deceit
will dwell in my house;

no one who speaks falsely
will stand in my presence.

Every morning I will put to silence
all the wicked in the land;

I will cut off every evildoer
from the city of the Lord.

Bible Reading 1 Kings 18:21-24, 26

Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him."

But the people said nothing.

Then Elijah said to them, "I am the only one of the Lord's prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. Get two bulls for us. Let Baal's prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire — he is God."

Then all the people said, "What you say is good."...

So they took the bull given them and prepared it.

Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. "Baal, answer us!" they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

Dwelling

Leisurely read again ... is there a word or idea that stirred within you? Linger over it and give it your attention ... is there something about the reading you'd like to ask God about? Pray your life to God ... take a moment to rest in God's presence.

Prayer HC 116

Living God, thank you that my prayers do not depend on spiritual frenzy or cracking heaven's code. I need not rouse you or speak loud enough or long enough to get your attention. Nevertheless, keep me passionate in prayer, knowing you listen, giving your grace and Holy Spirit to those who pray continually and groan inwardly. Amen.

Blessing Matthew 5:7

"Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy."
